Information

  • Address: Spichrzowa, Stargard
Located in the area of the current Whitehead Tower (Baszta Białogłówka) and Rampart Gate (Brama Wałowa), the old burgh was an administrative, economic, military and political hub of the region. It was built in the 9th or 10th century AD. The area of the so-called island between the forks of the Ina river had already been settled – local inhabitants lived in wicker huts. The burgh grew rapidly due to its location at the intersection of the trade routes connecting Pomerania with Greater Poland. In the 11th and 12th century, the burgh had between 1.5 and 2 thousand residents. Several dozen years after Stargard had been granted the town charter, the old burgh fortifications were dismantled and the site was incorporated into the town. The Griffonet is looking at the maquette of the old burgh and the surrounding settlements.
